As I was flying to Oklahoma to visit my son I began reading “Diamond Presence Twelve Stories of Finding God at the
Old Ball Park”. Now, I will admit that I have been a bit nostalgic of late as a recent “empty nester,” but I am confident that this book will stir up your emotions as well. This book is a "home-run" in the feel-good department!
As the title states, Diamond Presence is twelve stories written by different authors and/or editors who captain the reader on their own wonderful, personal journeys. They are journeys back to our own childhoods, as well, reminding us of evening baseball games with the neighbor-kids on the street in front of our homes or in vacant lots down the street from our homes. They are journeys that feel completely familiar because we, like the authors and editors of Diamond Presence, didn't grow up to become professional athletes. We are the regular people of this world and these are our stories
Diamond Presence also lets us in on the little secret that we as parents did OK by signing our children up for Little League and Pony Baseball. We can question many things that we did as parents, but sharing baseball with our kids, on whatever level we did it, should not be one of them. Sport, (read 'baseball'), is important on so many levels; not so much for the winning or losing but for the moments. God is in the moments and this is a book that speaks to those moments.
Relate-able, this book made me laugh out loud, smile a lot and nod my head in a “that’s right, yep! ” kind of sentiment. It also made me a bit teary. (Remember, I already confessed to being a bit nostalgic!)
As a Christian sports photographer, I found that this book, Diamond Presence, put into words what I work to capture on film, God at the Old Ball Park. Enjoy!
