1862  Marked the opening of baseball first enclosed park - Brooklyn's Union Grounds. 

1926  New York was awarded an ice hockey franchise named the Rangers. 

1941  Joe DiMaggio began his 56-game hitting streak against Chicago's Eddie Smith, going 1-for-4 with one RBI. 

1944  Cincinnati's Clyde Shoun tossed a no-hitter against the Boston Braves, winning 1-0. 

1952  Detroit's Virgil Trucks hurled a no-hitter against the Washington Senators, winning 1-0. 

1953  Rocky Marciano knocked out Jersey Joe Walcott in two minutes, 25 seconds in their Heavyweight bout in Chicago. 

1981  Cleveland pitcher Len Barker tossed a perfect game against Toronto, defeating the Blue Jays 3-0. 

1987  Oklahoma State's Robin Ventura extended his hitting streak to 48 games in his club's 18-14 victory over Oklahoma. 

1990  Edmonton's Petr Klima scored 15:13 into the third overtime period en route to a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins in Game 1 of the 1990 Finals at the Boston Garden. The game was the longest in Finals history. 

2001  Philadelphia 76ers guard Allen Iverson was named the NBA's MVP. 

2003  Arturo Moreno became the first Hispanic controlling owner of a Major League Baseball team, as he was introduced as the new man in charge of the Anaheim Angels. 

2004  Antonio Tarver knocked out Roy Jones in the second round to win the WBC light heavyweight title at the Mandalay Bay Casino. 

2006  New England Patriots quarterback Doug Flutie announced his retirement.
