IDEAS FOR INCORPORATING THIS SITE INTO YOUR TEACHING

For Parents, Teachers, Coaches

1. Use the “This Day In Sports” section for a short research paper

Kids can choose one sports event from the list and find out more about it by using any research means including the internet or library.  Encourage them to expand their searching by looking up the “little extras” that make a research paper more interesting.

Skills learned:

Research

Internet use

Picture downloading

Thinking “outside the box”

Expanding ideas

Example:

May 26 1959:  Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Harvey Haddix pitched a perfect game for 12 innings, but lost the perfect game and the no-hitter in the 13th when Henry Aaron slugged a home run in a 1-0 Milwaukee Braves victory.

Some ideas to expand on might include:

When did Harvey Haddix begin pro baseball?

What interesting tidbits can you find about him? (Ex: He was a left-hander.)

What is a perfect game?

Had he ever pitched a perfect game before?  Had anyone?

What are the highlights of his career?

Who is Henry Aaron?  What is his background in baseball?

What else interesting happened at that game?

Download a picture of him.

From one statement, a student can think and question, expanding that sentence to give their reader a better, clearer and more exact picture of the event.

2. Use the “This Day In Sports” section art/research project

Students chose an athlete whose birthday is on the day that you choose.  They will make a birthday card for that person, after figuring out how old the athlete is.  Encourage them to look up the athlete so that the card is personal to him or her.

Skills learned:

Math (yes, it's just a tiny bit of math, but still...)

Research

Creative use of information

Internet use

Art

Example:

June 26, 2006:

NFL quarterback Chad Pennington's birthday.  (1976)

New York Jets

Jetting you a Happy 30th Birthday Wish, Chad!!

(Maybe a picture of a jet flying to a picture of Pennington or the Jet's Logo on front with birthday candles around it...

(Open Card)

I wish you strength in your road to recovering the starting position for the Jets!

Carrying the team's leadership position is tough on a just-repaired shoulder, but I know you can do it!

Happy Birthday From,

A Fan.

This activity allows for the student's creativity to come to play in presenting information.

Let us know what you think!

This is a new addition to our site and we will be adding more teaching ideas weekly using sports.

Please let us know if this is a useful tool for you!
